Mariachi Chicana is an all-female, Mexican-American mariachi ensemble based in Austin, Texas. The group is composed of accomplished musicians, educators, students, mothers, and professionals with 10 to 35 years of experience. Proudly bilingual, many members hold university music degrees, teaching credentials, and extensive professional performance experience.

 

Under the artistic direction of violinist, vocalist, educator, and arranger Alicia Rubio, Mariachi Chicana delivers high-energy performances that engage audiences while celebrating Chicana culture and women’s achievements. The ensemble’s repertoire includes traditional mariachi songs, original arrangements, and original music by guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter Mireya Batres.

 

In its first year, Mariachi Chicana is making a strong impact in the Austin community and beyond. The ensemble has been invited to participate in events including Viva Bastrop and the women’s conference Hispanas Unidas: Historias Que Inspiran, providing opportunities to share its music and highlight the accomplishments of women in mariachi.

 

In June 2026, Mariachi Chicana presented its first Father’s Day Concert at the historic Scottish Rite Theater in Austin, featuring a special program honoring iconic singer-songwriters of Mexican music. The ensemble is also preparing an upcoming Christmas concert and developing additional concert productions throughout the year.

 

Beyond performance, Mariachi Chicana is committed to education and community engagement. The ensemble has presented educational programs at elementary schools throughout Central Texas, introducing students to the history of mariachi, traditional instruments, and Mexican cultural heritage.

 

Mariachi Chicana has been featured in VoyageAustin Magazine and on Austin’s FOX 7 during Women’s History Month, highlighting the ensemble’s work to increase women’s representation and leadership within mariachi.

 

Mariachi Chicana’s mission is to preserve mariachi music by creating professional opportunities for women to perform at the highest level. Through performance, education, and original music, Mariachi Chicana is dedicated to continuing to open doors for women in mariachi.
